Concrete / Blacktop Interface Joint Repair
The interface joint between concrete and asphalt (blacktop) is a common source of pavement failure across the UK highway network. These joints are especially prone to opening and water ingress, which leads to accelerated deterioration under traffic loading.
Why This Joint Fails
The fundamental issue lies in the incompatibility of thermal movement between the two materials. Concrete and asphalt expand and contract at different rates. Over time, this mismatch causes the joint to open, allowing:
- Water infiltration
- Freeze–thaw action
- Repetitive traffic loading to exploit the weakened area
This results in:
- Pumping of fine materials
- Surface breakup
- Progressive joint widening and failure
The Jointmaster Solution
To mitigate this, Rhino’s rebated Jointmaster system offers a long-term, flexible repair solution:
- A 200mm wide x 40mm deep rebate is cut over the failing joint
- The area is cleaned and prepared for bonding
- Jointmaster material is installed, bonding tightly to both concrete and asphalt surfaces
- The system remains watertight, flexible, and resistant to thermal stresses
Why It Works
- Adheres equally well to asphalt and concrete
- Accommodates differential movement without cracking
- Seals the joint against water ingress
- Prevents surface fretting and further joint degradation
A properly installed Jointmaster repair across concrete/blacktop interfaces ensures structural continuity, improved durability, and reduced future maintenance.
